    Encaustic Art...Anyone?

Just wondering if anyone out there does this (I am certain there will be).
Would anyone be willing to offer a bit of advice as I am thinking of giving it a go. I have bought a book which has loads of pretty pictures but I don't really think t is for someone starting out.

Oooh, will be very interested to hear how you get on, Jayne - I got a couple of Michael Bossom books after seeing him on C & C, and I really want to give it a go sometime, it looks so quick to do and the results can be pretty spectacular.

Haven't got any of the kit yet, which is why I haven't given it a go, I keep promising that once I'm more up to date with my scrapping I'll give it a go, I daren't start it now as I'll get even further behind on my albums!

    I have dabbled with it.
First off I bought a travel iron with no steam holes and some cheap wax crayons (some makes worked better than others) and played on glossy card to see if I would like it. I did like it but didn't want to have to fork out on the proper encaustic iron, so bought a selection of the encaustic waxes and card and took it from there really, still using my cheapo travel iron which works great!

I've had a go too Jemm - and like Sky said it's really easy. You just need to practice a bit to get to know how much pressure you need to put on the iron.

I'm going to do an Encaustic Art class at the August Cardmaking Retreat if you fancy coming to that (sorry - shameless plug!)

what do you all use - say the iron (which grey parrot says I can use a travel iron) there was also a wand - stylus thing with interchangeable heads. Just don't want to end up buying loads of stuff I don't really need)

There's information about a free online class on Michael Bossoms website (encaustic.com) - click on the 'learn' button at the top.

I started with the iron and starter set Jemm, but I loved it so much I went out and got the stylus a couple of weeks later. I use the iron for most stuff, but the stylus for "drawing" and "painting" things like trees, birds, flowers etc.

I've attached a couple of piccies so you can see what I mean. The landscape was painted with the iron, and the trees were done by painting the trunk and branches with the stylus and then adding in the leaves and blossom by dotting the ink on, again with the stylus.

Thanks - believe it or not, I'd only been practicing for half an hour when I did that one! See Jemm, told you it was easy

    rolling Great fun

I too have done some, it really is great fun and alot easier than it looks.
I still use a travel iron, but i also use the stylis and it is very usefull.
a word of caution, make sure you pick the stylus up by the handle,as the other end is Bl--dy hot.
You can also transfer the finished item on to fabric, great fun.

It is DEF easy enough to do!!

I had the kits for my bday a couple of years ago - the iron, the set of 16 waxes inc loads of the special paper and 2 of Michael Bossom's books, plus some extra waxes if I remember correctly...I love it but don't have enough time to do it very often...funny enough was thiking of getting it all again last week!

Also, Antoinette had a go and was as good as me!!! She was able to reproduce the pics in the book no probs!

So I'd say GO FOR IT!! Haven't tried with cheapy wax crayons so can't comment on effectiveness...I just wanted the whole lot together!! Our local Wyevales carries all the stuff...really good fun...personally I love the fantasy stuff but find that harder to achieve in a way. Antoinette got some fabby skies...she was better than me at that

Make sure you upload when you've had a go!!!

PS Has you package arrived yet?!!!

I love this art!!! I've been playing for quite a while, but haven't got round to buying the stylus yet!!

Its soooo easy! Everytime you do it, you'll get a diff piccie! You can even wipe it off and start again!!!

Have fun, and let your imagination flow!!!
