I use 3/4. work fine for any book. I've just brought a couple of the 1 inch wires for when I do really chunky books

I went for a mixed pack to see what I would use most of and now I know I am a fat scrapper.... so I need fat o'wires!! Its handy to have a range because if you feel like doing something small... you can!

Craft Obsessions sell them individually so I would recommend you buying one of each say to start with. Depends really what you want to do with them. I would use say 1½ " for say a circle journal as you don't know what embellis others are going to put on the pages so it would make it a bit fat ! ½" ones are fine for little notebooks.

thank you for the replies-not really sure what I have planned yet as I have only ever made 2 maze books(apart from cardmaking and the odd scrapbook page and the crafts with the children)
Im currently making 2 of the matchbox advent calanders(cube) which I am really enjoying so I thought I would seek inspiration from here.

a mixed pack is a great idea
