OK, sussed it. The reason it won't weld is because I haven't made it into one object, it is still in 4 pieces as I didn't anticipate using it for anything like this

I don't know how good you are with Inkscape, do you know how to select nodes from 2 separate pieces and weld the end node from each together to make it 1 Piece? There's no point me teaching you to suck eggs if you already know how.
