I would add a layer of think copier paper to sand side and cut on the paper side IFYKI M so as not to scratch.

I was thinking could I squash bottle tops in there the other day - yet to try and would protect with card I think.

Not tried it, but I don't see why not! If I put thicker card through mine, I sometimes find I just have to 'finish' the cutting with a pair of scissors -- but it's normally one a thin layer the cutter hasn't gone through.........

I managed to cut some Quickutz Kokopelli (fertility god) out of sand paper using my side kick, the only thing i would say is the sandy side of the paper does stick to the foam on the die. Fine grade sandpaper definately works for me and they looked fab.

It may blunt your die, the alternative is to cut out the sandcastle with cardstock, run it thhrough the Xyron and sprinkle sand over it and press it down hard OR use incredibly sticky tape sheet stuff and sprinkle sand on.

All this talk of sandpaper is actually making me get goosbumps all over! I can't even touch it never mind the thought of the sound of it crunching through my quickutz - (shivering with fear now!!!)
